Y5 have been gathering evidence from different sources about Walter Tull today to answer the question as to whether he was a significant person. They found out all about his early life, his footballing career and how he joined the army. He faced a lot of challenges being from African descent, and losing his mother and father by the age of 9, but he didn’t let that stand in his way. He was a good footballer playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town and was the first footballer from Northampton Town to join the Football Battalion. He became a second lieutenant and the first black man in the British army to hold such a rank. He was sadly killed in action on 25 March 1918.
