For their first science lesson of the year, Year 5 have been looking at irreversible changes, in particular, burning. We looked at the 3 things needed to produce fire and what new substances were formed when fire occurs. Then we did an experiment with 3 different sized glasses to prove that fire needs oxygen. We discussed what happens to the mass of a candle when lit and finally we conducted the iron wool combustion experiment in which the oxygen in the air chemically combined to produce iron oxide (or rust!).
